I had the incredible opportunity to attend the annual meeting of the Yalta European Strategy in Kyiv, organized in collaboration with the Victor Pinchuk Foundation. Victor Pinchuk, a successful Ukrainian businessman, played a crucial role in this event. The highlight of the conference was the opening speech by Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, who made a thought-provoking argument. He emphasized that when we compromise on justice and make deals with leaders like Putin, we are setting ourselves up for disastrous consequences.
However, achieving justice in war often necessitates the complete defeat and occupation of the aggressor. Considering that Russia has a significantly larger population than Ukraine, the Ukrainian soldiers’ determination is admirable yet mixed with signs of exhaustion, as revealed during their heartfelt discussions.
During the conference, a panel of war veterans comprised four male soldiers, one with a missing forearm and another with an eye injury. A courageous female soldier also joined them. These individuals had first-hand experience fighting on the front lines. Dmytro Finashyn, an intelligence officer of the National Guard of Ukraine, who showcased a black prosthetic forearm, expressed his grief and determination, stating, “We are losing our best people, the ones who should be shaping Ukraine’s future. That’s why it’s crucial to minimize our losses. We need the world’s support because we are fighting for global democracy.”
Alina Mykhailova, an officer who had spent over a year in the field, couldn’t hold back her tears as she mourned the loss of her beloved commander during her presentation. She candidly expressed the realities of war, saying, “We are facing devastating casualties. There is nothing glorious or romantic about battle; it is ugly and cruel. Before going to bed every night, everyone should remind themselves of the immense hardships our soldiers endure on the front lines. The reality of war is far different from what you see on TV. We each need personal support, and every soldier deserves someone who understands and never turns away from our cause.”
