Q. I’m seeking your guidance, if you would be so kind. I have an elderly parent who is trying to pass his exam, but for some reason he can’t pass it. He is not computer literate. I’ve printed the sample exams for him, but still no success. Any help you can provide would be very appreciated.
– Paul Maldonado, Yorba Linda
A. Are you looking for ways to support your elderly parent in passing his exam, Paul? It can be challenging, especially if he is not familiar with computers. While the traditional written test for driver’s license renewal has evolved into a knowledge test, computer proficiency is now essential.
However, there is an alternative solution for him to consider. The Department of Motor Vehicles offers an interactive eLearning course that can substitute the knowledge test, provided that he is eligible and renewing a basic Class C license. This course is specifically designed for individuals who struggle with tests or prefer a different approach. It can be completed on a home computer within approximately 45 minutes.
The eLearning course consists of seven sections, each with a quiz.
Unlike a field goal attempt with time running out and defenders charging, your parent can take the quizzes as many times as needed.
Additionally, participants can take breaks during the course as long as it is completed within a year.
Unfortunately, the course is currently only available in English.
On the other hand, the knowledge test is available in 35 languages from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays, excluding holidays. Test takers must use a computer with a webcam for monitoring. If the test is failed twice, the third attempt must be taken at a DMV office.
Q. Hi Honk: I’m curious about the removal of the loop off-ramps at Beach Boulevard during the construction on the 405 Freeway. These off-ramps provided a smoother exit and reduced congestion. Can you explain why this decision was made?
– Lloyd Joly, Huntington Beach
A. Honk contacted the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA), the governing body overseeing the $2.2 billion widening and improvement project of the 405 Freeway between the 73 and the 605 Freeway, which is set to be completed by the end of the year.
Interestingly, the OCTA has a different perspective than yours, Lloyd.
In an email response to Honk, Joel Zlotnik, spokesperson for OCTA, stated that the configuration of the ramps at Beach Boulevard was redesigned from a full cloverleaf to a partial cloverleaf. This new design aims to reduce weaving and merging between ramps, ultimately improving safety, traffic flow, and reducing congestion.
HONKIN’ FACT: In a peculiar incident a few weeks ago, an officer in Nebraska pulled over a modified Ford Crown Victoria after receiving a 911 call. To the officer’s surprise, the car had a full-size bull riding in the area typically reserved for the front passenger seat, according to The Associated Press. The car’s windshield and roof were partially cut away to showcase Howdy Doody during parades. Although it remains unclear why Howdy Doody was without a trailer this time, as there was no parade, several traffic violations were evident. Nevertheless, the officer let the driver off with a warning, instructing him to take his unusual passenger home.
