Opinion: Allow Theresa May an Opportunity to Fulfill Brexit, Considering the Chaotic Fallout from its Proponents

Theresa May frequently asserts that “Brexit means Brexit.” While this phrase may hold meaning for her, it remains unclear to the general public exactly what she means by it. As the new prime minister, it would be beneficial for Mrs. May to provide a clear explanation of her stance on Brexit and the implications it holds.

Many television journalists are suggesting that Theresa May should call a general election to gain a “personal mandate” as prime minister and secure “democratic legitimacy.” However, this notion contradicts both our history and constitutional law. Since 1900, only eight out of the 22 individuals who became prime minister did so by winning a general election. The majority of prime ministers succeed to the office between elections, without seeking a personal mandate. Therefore, it is misguided to claim that prime ministers require personal mandates from the electorate.

It is important to remember that prime ministers are not elected by the public; they are chosen by the Queen based on their ability to command a majority in the Commons. The public has the opportunity to elect members of Parliament every five years. While our constitution may evolve, we should not tamper with it recklessly.

Labour’s election coordinator, Jon Trickett, calls for an election following a change of prime minister. However, he did not express the same plea when Gordon Brown replaced Tony Blair. This raises questions about the consistency of his demands.

It is worth noting that both David Cameron and Theresa May were on the Remain side of the Brexit argument. Cameron, after losing the referendum, decided to resign as Prime Minister. Now, May, who had the same stance, is set to become the new Prime Minister. The irony in this situation raises eyebrows.
