Renowned actor Frederic Forrest, known for his roles in iconic films like “Apocalypse Now,” “The Conversation,” “The Rose,” and “One From the Heart,” has passed away at the age of 86.
Forrest succumbed to a long illness on Friday in Santa Monica, as confirmed by various media reports.
Actress Bette Midler, who shared the screen with Forrest in the 1979 film “The Rose,” broke the news on Friday evening via her Twitter account.
Midler expressed, “The extraordinary and beloved Frederic Forrest has left us. I want to extend my gratitude to all his fans and friends for their unwavering support during these past few months. He was an exceptional actor and a remarkable human being, and I was fortunate to have him in my life. May he rest in peace.”
Forrest, a native of Texas, began his acting career on stage in the 1960s. Alongside his extensive stage work, he accumulated an impressive repertoire in film, including notable productions such as “Tucker: The Man and His Dream” (1988), “The Missouri Breaks” (1976), “It Lives Again” (1978), “Hammett” (1982), “Valley Girl” (1983), “The Stone Boy” (1984), “The Two Jakes” (1990), “Chasers” (1994), “Lassie” (1994), “Point Blank” (1998), and “The Quality of Light” (2003).
His television appearances encompassed leading roles in the 1974 CBS movie “Larry,” the 1985 miniseries “Quo Vadis?,” the 1989 hit “Lonesome Dove,” and a recurring character in the late 1980s series “21 Jump Street.”
Forrest fostered a fruitful collaboration with director Francis Ford Coppola, featuring in four of Coppola’s films and serving as executive producer in “Hammett” (1982).
His portrayal of the character “Chef” Hicks in “Apocalypse Now” culminates with a memorable beheading scene. Additionally, he took on the male lead opposite Teri Garr in Coppola’s ambitious yet disappointing 1982 romance “One From the Heart.”
His final acting credit was in the 2006 remake of “All the King’s Men,” where he portrayed the father of Sean Penn’s character, Willie Stark.
