Opinion | A Look into the Citi Bike Karen Incident

It is ethically and logically incorrect to assume that a white woman cannot have a valid complaint or should be prevented from speaking out if she feels wronged. Unfortunately, the term “Karen” implies exactly that – if you are a white woman, your relative privilege automatically calls into question any complaint you may have, and attempting to defend yourself only serves to confirm the accusations against you.

The same applies to any woman who, whether in solidarity with other women or because she believes the targeted individual does not deserve the derogatory term, speaks up on behalf of a labeled “Karen.” Giving the benefit of the doubt or defending the accused instantly associates you with being a Karen. For instance, when the head of diversity at Uber, Bo Young Lee, organized a discussion forum called “Don’t Call Me Karen” to foster open conversations about race, some employees complained on Slack. Later, at an employee town hall, a Black employee suggested that these discussions were “tone-deaf, offensive, and triggering,” and as a result, Uber suspended Lee.

For a white woman, the options are grim: either refrain from expressing any concerns altogether or remain silent about the ones you do have. This contradicts the principles of the women’s movement, the #MeToo movement, and basic notions of justice.

The Karen stereotype reflects a prevalent element of misogyny within our society. As Helen Lewis wrote in The Atlantic, “‘Karen’ has become synonymous with ‘woman’ among those who consider ‘woman’ an insult.” Furthermore, journalist Nina Burleigh noted that this term specifically targets white women over the age of 40, who have long been the subject of ridicule in popular culture. Burleigh emphasizes that “white middle-class women of a certain age are among the last groups one can hurl targeted abuse online without being canceled.” Additionally, she highlights that it has never been socially unacceptable to demean women simply because they are women, unless they can also claim membership in another disadvantaged group based on race, body weight, sexual preference, or disability.

No matter a person’s gender, race, or age, they should never be reduced to a negative stereotype. When individuals, regardless of their gender or ethnicity, commit wrongful actions, they do so as individuals, not as representatives of a particular demographic group.
