Ontario’s BORN Birth Registry Hacked: 3.4 Million Records Compromised

Approximately 3.4 million people in Ontario who sought pregnancy care and advice between January 2010 and May 2023 were impacted by a cybersecurity breach.

BORN (Better Outcomes Registry and Network) announced the breach in a statement released on Monday.

BORN became aware of the breach on May 31, 2023, subsequently posting a public notice on its website and notifying the Ontario Provincial Police as well as the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario. The agency has now provided additional details regarding the specific data that was leaked.

The statement revealed that unauthorized copies of files containing personal health information of approximately 3.4 million individuals were taken from BORN’s systems during the breach.

The breach occurred due to an international security incident involving a file transfer software used by the Ministry of Health-funded perinatal and child registry to transmit data to authorized care and research partners.

“The personal health information that was copied was collected from a large network of mostly Ontario health care facilities and providers regarding fertility, pregnancy, newborn and child health care offered between January 2010 and May 2023,” BORN stated.

There is no evidence at this time that the copied data has been misused. BORN is actively monitoring the internet, including the dark web.

BORN reiterates that it will never contact individuals via email, text, or phone to request sensitive personal information.
