Only 20% of women know about the increased risk of womb cancer from taking higher-than-prescribed doses of HRT

  • Four in five women are unaware of cancer risks of boosting their doses of HRT

Four in five women are unaware that taking higher-than-prescribed doses of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) drugs containing oestrogen can increase their risk of womb cancer, according to a survey conducted by the gynaecological cancer charity The Eve Appeal. This revelation comes after The Mail on Sunday exposed the trend of women self-medicating with mega-doses of HRT to alleviate menopause symptoms, based on advice found on social media platforms. The survey, which polled 2,000 women in the UK, highlights the need to educate women about the link between excessive oestrogen and womb cancer, a condition that affects nearly 10,000 women annually.

Excessive oestrogen can also be caused by health conditions such as obesity and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and has been linked to ovarian and breast cancer. The Eve Appeal’s Dr. Aziza Sesay, a GP, stresses the importance of understanding and reducing this risk.

HRT typically contains compounds similar to the hormones oestrogen and progesterone, prescribed in patch, gel, or spray form for absorption through the skin. Experts warn that excessive hormone levels can lead to anxiety, palpitations, and mood swings, and patients may develop tachyphylaxis, requiring increasing amounts of hormonal treatment to feel “normal.” Long-term misuse of HRT can result in endometrial hyperplasia, where the womb lining thickens, leading to heavy bleeding and an increased risk of womb cancer.

Dr. Katie Barber, who runs a GP-led NHS gynaecology service in Oxfordshire, has revealed that a significant number of women taking HRT are doing so at much higher doses than recommended. Safety studies for HRT at these doses have not been conducted.
