Activists and politicians are commemorating the first anniversary of the US Supreme Court’s landmark ruling that overturned a nationwide right to abortion. The reactions to the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization ruling on June 24, 2022, which overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, vary from praise to protests. Advocates on both sides organized rallies in Washington and throughout the country to bring attention to this significant ruling. Lynn Rust, a resident of Silver Spring, Maryland, expressed her frustration at the interference of others in the medical decisions between a woman and her doctor during a Women’s March rally in Washington.
On the anniversary, leaders of the anti-abortion movement shared their thoughts. Marjorie Dannenfelser, President of Susan B. Anthony Pro Life America, stated, “We celebrate one year of momentous progress in the fight for life.” Ronna McDaniel, Chairwoman of the Republican National Committee, praised the ruling and highlighted its impact in saving lives and steering America away from the previous era of abortion on-demand practices. This ruling has made abortion a prominent issue during election campaigns and further deepened the policy divide among states.
Most states controlled by Republicans have implemented abortion bans, with 14 states currently enforcing laws that restrict abortions in all stages of pregnancy, with certain exceptions. These exceptions usually pertain to the life and health of women, as well as pregnancies resulting from rape or incest. On the other hand, most states led by Democrats have taken measures to protect abortion access, particularly by implementing measures to shield doctors and healthcare professionals from prosecution when providing abortions in defiance of other states’ bans. President Biden recently expressed his concerns about the “extreme and dangerous abortion bans” that jeopardize the health and lives of women.
