The cases were reported in individuals who spent time at the California Grand Casino in Pacheco, a suburb of Oakland, between 2018 and 2023, according to the Contra Costa Health in a statement provided to SFGATE.

Tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by bacteria that can spread in the air between people in close contact, especially indoors, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This disease primarily affects the lungs and can cause a persistent and painful cough.

To control the spread of TB in the United States, it is standard practice to genetically test any confirmed cases. In a press conference, Dr. Meera Sreenivasan, deputy health officer for Contra Costa County, explained the process of isolating and sequencing the bacteria’s DNA to identify individuals affected.

The county has reached out to around 300 individuals who may have been exposed to TB at the casino. Those who have not been contacted can call the county at 925-313-6740 to inquire about getting tested for TB, according to a press release issued by the county.

Dr. Sreenivasan emphasized the importance of seeking medical advice even for individuals without symptoms, as TB can remain dormant for months or even years before becoming contagious. Early identification and treatment are crucial to prevent the disease from spreading.

Despite the outbreak, the local health officer mentioned that the risk of TB within the community remains low and that the casino’s operations have not been a contributing factor to the spread. The transmission mainly occurs through close contact between individuals.

The most common symptoms of TB include a persistent or bloody cough, fever, unexpected weight loss, night sweats, and fatigue, according to the county.

Becky Warren, spokesperson for California Grand Casino, stated, “Our foremost commitment is to ensure the safety of our customers and employees. As confirmed by Contra Costa Health, none of the linked cases are currently contagious or related to our staff. Furthermore, there have been no ongoing sources of transmission identified at the casino. We are actively working with the county to notify and test individuals to prioritize public health and safety.”
