Officials report 7 fatalities and over 100 injuries caused by Russian missile attack in Chernihiv

Early Saturday morning, a missile strike carried out by Russia in Chernihiv, Ukraine resulted in at least seven fatalities and over 100 injuries, according to Ukrainian officials.

Reports state that a polytechnic university and theater were among the structures damaged in the attack. Among the victims was a 6-year-old girl, as confirmed by Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko in a post on Telegram.

“Her mother is in critical condition,” Klymenko wrote. “The police officers provided immediate assistance to the girl. Unfortunately, due to severe blood loss, doctors were unable to save her upon arrival at the hospital.”

Acting Chernihiv mayor Oleksandr Lomako stated that the attack resulted in approximately 117 injuries, as reported by The Associated Press.

“There is a park right behind the drama theater, where many children and their parents usually spend time,” Lomako told a local outlet, as cited by CNN. “There are also several restaurants with outdoor terraces located nearby. The incident occurred in the middle of the day when the city center is typically bustling with people.”

“This act can only be interpreted as a war crime against civilians,” he added.

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged the international community to take a stand against Russian terrorism. He included a video showcasing the damage caused to the city.

“Living next to a terrorist state means this,” Zelensky said, according to translations. “This is why we are rallying the entire world against it.”

“Today, a Russian missile struck the heart of Chernihiv,” he continued. “A square, a university, and a theater. Russia has turned an ordinary Saturday into a day of pain and loss. There are casualties. My deepest condolences to all those who have lost loved ones. All necessary services are working on-site, including rescuers, police, and doctors.”

Interestingly, both Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin are currently traveling abroad.
