OC Judge Faces Charges for Wife’s Murder

Orange County Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Ferguson, aged 72, has been charged with the fatal shooting of his wife at their Anaheim Hills home, it was revealed on Friday. Ferguson is facing charges of murder, with sentencing enhancements for discharging a firearm causing death and the use of a firearm. The criminal complaint also alleges that he threatened his wife earlier in the evening by making a hand gesture indicative of pointing a gun at her. Notably, the alleged homicide occurred while he was an active judge and is considered an act of domestic violence.

Sheryl Ferguson, the judge’s wife, was tragically killed on August 3. Deputy District Attorney Christopher Alex filed the case on Thursday, but official records were not available until the next day. Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer consulted with the Attorney General’s Office, which determined that there was no conflict in prosecuting the judge.

In a statement, Ferguson’s attorneys, John Barnett and Paul Meyer, expressed that the incident was an accident and nothing more. They conveyed their sympathies to the Ferguson family, emphasizing that it is a tragic situation.

The arrest of Jeffrey Ferguson occurred after Anaheim Police Department officers responded to a shooting incident at his home. Sheryl Ferguson was found inside the residence with at least one gunshot wound and was declared dead at the scene. Jeffrey Ferguson, suspected of murder, was booked into Anaheim Jail and later transferred to Orange County Jail. He posted bond and was released at 2:05 p.m. last Friday.

Further details regarding the alleged crime have not been released by the police. Orange County Superior Court Presiding Judge Maria Hernandez expressed her condolences for the family and assured that the court will comply with their legal and ethical obligations once a case is filed.

Leaders in the Orange County Superior Court were informed of Jeffrey Ferguson’s arrest by the Anaheim police. The couple had two adult sons, Kevin and Phillip.

Jeffrey Ferguson, originally from Oakland, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences and social ecology from UC Irvine in 1973.
