Nostalgic Reflections: Ruru and Yassi’s Takeaway from 90s-themed Film – Rediscovering the Simplicity of Life

Yassi Pressman and Ruru Madrid Star in “Video City: Be Kind, Please Rewind”

Yassi Pressman (left) and Ruru Madrid, both popular Filipino actors, reminisce about their childhood memories of renting movies from the same Video City branch in Antipolo City. Now, they find themselves working together and starring in a movie called “Video City: Be Kind, Please Rewind,” which pays tribute to their shared pastime.

During a media conference held by Viva Films and GMA Pictures, Yassi and Ruru reveal that they might have crossed paths at the video rental shop as kids, but didn’t notice each other. Regardless, they are amazed at how a simple hobby like watching films has influenced their career choices in the showbiz industry.

Yassi shares that she used to watch VHS and VCD recordings of live performances and musicals, which fueled her dream of becoming a performer. Even though she couldn’t understand Tagalog at the time, she enjoyed watching movies starring Judy Ann Santos and Vilma Santos. On the other hand, Ruru’s movie list always included action-packed films featuring Robin Padilla, Raymart Santiago, Cesar Montano, and Fernando Poe Jr. These films inspired him to pursue a career as an action star, and he is grateful for the opportunities he has had to fulfill his dreams.

Their latest project, “Video City,” directed by Raynier Brizuela, revolves around two characters from different eras. Ruru plays Han, a film student who loses his motivation to complete his thesis. After attending a tribute event for his sick mother, Han discovers a VHS tape rewinder in an old internet cafe. This leads him to a magical portal that transports him back to a Video City store in 1995. There, he meets Ningning (played by Yassi), an aspiring celebrity. As Han shuttles back and forth between 2023 and 1995, he falls deeper in love with Ningning. However, their blossoming relationship is threatened when Han realizes that his time in 1995 is gradually diminishing.

“Video City: Be Kind, Please Rewind” marks Yassi and Ruru’s reunion on the big screen since their last project together in 2013, called “Dormitoryo.” Ruru expresses his admiration for Yassi’s achievements and talent, emphasizing her ability to bring light and emotions to every scene. Yassi also praises Ruru as a good actor who reciprocates and enhances her performances.

The chemistry between Yassi and Ruru in the movie came naturally, according to both actors. They didn’t have to force it because they put their hearts into their work and relied on trust. As they reflect on the film’s theme, they highlight the fantasy of two people from different eras connecting and fighting against time and destiny to be together. They believe that the material itself is enough to evoke kilig, a Tagalog term for romantic excitement.

Being born in the late ’90s, Yassi and Ruru didn’t experience firsthand what it was like growing up in that decade. However, while filming “Video City,” they got a glimpse of a simpler life without the influence of social media. They share the observation that modern technology magnifies problems and makes time appear fleeting. They also mention the overwhelming options provided by social media, which often distract people from their goals. Despite these challenges, they emphasize the importance of having a strong heart, believing in oneself, and taking necessary steps to achieve dreams.
