North Regina Little League crowned national champions after defeating B.C., sets sights on world series

The North Regina Little League achieved a historic victory on Thursday, defeating Little League British Columbia and becoming the first Saskatchewan team in over 20 years to qualify for the Little League World Series.

Regina had the honor of hosting the 2023 Canadian Little League Championship, where teams from across Canada competed for the chance to represent their country. In the final match of the 10-day tournament, North Regina faced off against Little League BC for the national championship.

Although North Regina started the tournament with a tough loss to B.C., they displayed resilience and determination by winning three consecutive games. Their impressive comeback secured their place in the World Little League Championship in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

For the team, this accomplishment is a dream come true. They are thrilled to represent their community on an international stage.

“After our initial loss, we gathered as a team on the field, and everyone said, ‘Let’s go boys, we’re going to win this!'” shared Nickson Hjelsing, Second Base/Pitcher. “My heart started racing.”

The North Regina Little League is like a family to him.

“We’ve been together since October, training together,” said Hjelsing.

Prior to the game on Thursday, Braeden McQueen shared that their coaches encouraged the team to give their best effort.

“It didn’t matter if we won or lost, as long as we played our game,” he said. “It felt great… Little League BC was the team to beat, and we beat them.”

Manager Cole Warken expressed his pride in the team’s performance throughout the week. He witnessed their unwavering determination and teamwork.

“The boys really fought,” he said. “At the end of the round robin and into the semi-finals, we had no doubt on the bench. No matter the score or situation, the boys never stopped fighting.”

North Regina Little League will depart for Pennsylvania on Saturday. The 2023 Little League Baseball World Series is scheduled to begin on August 16 and will run until August 27.
