NEW YORK, Oct. 15 (UPI) — Norman Reedus reveals that his lead role in the popular zombie-apocalypse television series, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, faces a critical decision in the finale of the first season: stay with his loyal friend and close community in the United States or remain with the new people who greatly depend on him in France.

Reedus portrayed Daryl, a quiet, devoted, courageous, expert hunter, and tracker from Georgia, for 11 seasons on the hit show, The Walking Dead, which concluded almost a year ago on AMC.

In the spinoff, the world-weary character gets kidnapped and taken to Europe by boat, embarking on a journey spanning six episodes, as he tries to reunite with Carol (Melissa McBride) and their group of fellow survivors on the U.S. East Coast.

Throughout his journey, he aids nuns Isabelle (Clemence Poesy) and Sylvie (Laika Blanc-Francard) in escorting Laurent (Louis Pech Scigliuzzi), a young boy who may hold the key to humanity’s salvation, to a concealed location while evading both the walking dead and a well-armed paramilitary faction.

“Home is where the heart is, I guess. His heart is just being pulled in France. He’s starting to care for these people,” Reedus recently stated in an interview with UPI at a press conference preceding the Season 1 finale of Daryl Dixon.

“He’s like those iconic characters from Billy Jack and the Kung Fu television series that I adored as a child: a solitary figure on a quest,” the actor expressed. “Even on the flagship show [The Walking Dead], Daryl would venture out on his own to rescue people or pursue his objectives. However, I believe he’s torn. That’s the narrative we’re exploring.”

Despite growing fond of Isabelle and Laurent in France, Daryl always yearns for Carol’s companionship and longs to check up on her.

“They share a bond where there are numerous unspoken words,” Reedus said of the characters, confirming that Daryl will have a more prominent role in Season 2 following his cameo appearance in Season 1.

“She is perfectly capable of taking care of herself, of course, but when you’ve been part of a show for this many years, the connections only become stronger and stronger. He wants to go home, but he can’t leave yet because he’s not the type to turn his back on others.”

Reedus, who also serves as a producer on the show, emphasized the importance of an authentic portrayal of the French language, culture, and history in Daryl Dixon. He emphasized that they did not want to present a cliché, Americanized version of France, complete with poodles and berets.

“We wanted the French audience to feel like it’s their show as well,” the actor explained.

“French writers were involved. There are subtle French jokes that French viewers will appreciate. We fought to keep a significant portion of the dialogue in French. We fought for subtitles.”

In the spinoff, Daryl trades in his iconic crossbow for a medieval-style mace as his weapon of choice.

“I simply enjoy using it,” Reedus shared about Daryl’s new weapon.

“That crossbow weighs around 45 pounds. I love the crossbow, but when you have it strapped to your back and need to run across a field, it constantly jabs into your spine. Everyone always wonders, ‘How is he able to find bolts [to use with it]?'”

The show has reached an interim agreement with the Screen Actors Guild to film its second season, defying the strike that has halted the majority of Hollywood film and television productions and prevented actors from working or promoting their projects for the past three months.
