American sprinter Noah Lyles emerged as the victor in the men’s 100m event at the 2023 World Athletics Championships held in Budapest, Hungary. Lyles, 26 years old, completed the race in an impressive 9.83 seconds, securing not only the victory but also the joint fastest time of the year.

In a surprising turn of events, Lyles mentioned that he had always expected to win the event, even when no one else believed in his abilities.

During an interview with the NBC Sports broadcast, Lyles stated, “It was unexpected for everybody else. I believe in myself. I believe in God. I believe in the mission that me and my coach have. We trained nine months for this, for this moment right here.”

He added, “You only have one shot to hit your peak, and we made sure it counted. Like you said, to achieve greatness, to become one of the legends, you have to win the 100.”

Letsile Tebogo finished in second place, claiming the silver medal with a time of 9.88 seconds, while Zharnel Hughes from Britain took the bronze, just one thousandth of a second behind Tebogo.

It is worth mentioning that Marcell Jacobs, the Olympic gold medalist in this event, did not manage to qualify for the final.

Lyles, who has already won the 200m world championship twice before, will be participating in the event again later this week, aiming for a three-peat.

At last year’s world championships in Eugene, Oregon, Lyles broke the American 200m record that had been held by Michael Johnson for 26 years. His impressive time of 19.31 seconds made him the third fastest man over the distance.
