New York City Mayor Eric Adams refutes former colleague’s sexual assault allegation

NEW YORK — Mayor Eric Adams is vehemently denying allegations of sexual assault brought against him by a woman claiming the incident occurred 30 years ago. The lawsuit citing the alleged attack was filed just last Wednesday.

According to the lawsuit, the woman accuses Adams of assaulting her in 1993 during his time with the NYPD. Ordinarily, such claims would fall outside the statute of limitations, rendering them ineligible for legal action. However, a recent legislation, the Adult Survivors Act, temporarily lifted the time limit for a year-long period which is set to expire soon, making the lawsuit admissible.

Instead of discussing Thanksgiving preparations and serving pies, the mayor has been addressing the serious allegations leveled against him. “The accusation absolutely did not happen. I don’t recall who this person is. I never recall even meeting them. I spent my life protecting people,” Adams stated.

The lawsuit seeks damages totaling a minimum of $5 million and alleges intentional and negligent actions causing physical, psychological, and other injuries stemming from behavior constituting sexual offenses. This is one of three Adult Survivors Act lawsuits filed by attorney Megan Goddard, all of which were filed this week.

“But this absolutely never happened, and it’s just unfortunate,” Adams said in response to the allegations.

CBS New York has refrained from disclosing the identity of the accuser, in line with their policy of not naming sexual abuse victims. In addition to Mayor Adams, the lawsuit targets the NYPD Transit Bureau and the NYPD Guardians Association.

Efforts to reach out to these parties, the attorney who filed the lawsuit, and the accuser have been unsuccessful.
