The study analyzed a staggering 4,011 mass shootings between 2014 and 2022, defining them as incidents involving four or more gun deaths. Following Louisiana, Illinois placed third in the rankings despite having tight gun control laws and a relatively low ownership rate of 22%. The top five states with the highest rates of mass shootings included Mississippi (2.91 per million people) and Alabama (2.32 per million people). Conversely, Hawaii and North Dakota recorded no mass shootings during the study period, effectively ranking at the bottom.
Illinois led the list in terms of the sheer number of mass shootings, with 414 incidents, followed closely by California with 367 and Texas with 270. Leslie Barnard, the lead researcher behind the study and a PhD student, stated that the objective was to shed light on the “why, where, and how often” to foster a greater understanding of this complex issue.
Barnard emphasizes that while the study provides valuable insights, it does not provide definitive answers. However, it serves as a basis for generating further hypotheses and discussions around mass shootings. One challenge she highlights is the disparity in how mass shootings are defined, with various sources either including or excluding deaths in their definition. This inconsistency poses difficulties for epidemiologists who strive for a cohesive standard.
