New Record Set for Hottest Day Ever Recorded Worldwide – July 3, 2023

On Monday, July 3, we witnessed a historic moment as it became the hottest day ever recorded globally. This data comes from the U.S. National Centers for Environmental Prediction, and it signifies a concerning trend in our changing climate.

The average global temperature on this day reached a scorching 17.01 degrees Celsius (62.62 Fahrenheit), surpassing the previous record set in August 2016 at 16.92C (62.46F). Heatwaves have been sweeping across the world, leaving no region untouched.

The southern United States has been enduring an intense heat dome, while China has been experiencing relentless heatwaves with temperatures exceeding 35C (95F). In North Africa, temperatures have soared close to 50C (122F). The heat even reached Antarctica, which is currently in its winter season. Ukraine’s Vernadsky Research Base in the Argentine Islands of Antarctica broke its July temperature record with a staggering 8.7C (47.6F).

Despite these alarming records, this is not a moment for celebration. Climate scientist Friederike Otto from the Grantham Institute for Climate Change and the Environment warns that this is a death sentence for both people and ecosystems.

Scientists attribute this extreme weather phenomenon to a combination of climate change and an emerging El Nino pattern. Zeke Hausfather, a research scientist at Berkeley Earth, predicts that this record will be just the beginning, as increasing greenhouse gas emissions and a growing El Nino event push temperatures to new and dangerous highs throughout the year.

At the end of the day, it is clear that we need to take urgent action to address climate change and its devastating effects. Our planet and its inhabitants are at stake, and we must work together to ensure a sustainable future.
