New Miami Dolphins Signing: DE Jason Pierre-Paul joins team after Jaelan Phillips Achilles injury

Jason Pierre-Paul is on his way to Miami.

The Miami Dolphins are set to sign Pierre-Paul from the New Orleans Saints practice squad, as reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. This move comes shortly after the Dolphins lost Jaelan Phillips, their pass rusher, for the remainder of the season due to an Achilles injury.

Pierre-Paul recently joined the Saints’ practice squad after being a free agent, and was promoted to the active roster for their recent game against the Atlanta Falcons, where he played 17 snaps and made two tackles before being assigned back to the practice squad.

Given the Saints’ lack of interest in keeping him on the field, the Dolphins seem ready to provide the 34-year-old veteran pass rusher with an opportunity. It is currently unknown when Pierre-Paul will make his debut.

Phillips suffered a non-contact injury early in the fourth quarter of the Dolphins’ game against the New York Jets, leading to a confirmed season-ending Achilles tear following an MRI. Phillips, the 2021 NFL Draft No. 18 pick for the Dolphins, concluded the season with 43 tackles and 6.5 sacks.

Pierre-Paul is now set to assist in filling the void left by Phillips for the remainder of the season. Last season with the Baltimore Ravens, Pierre-Paul recorded 26 tackles and three sacks in 14 games while playing on a one-year deal. He signed a new one-year contract with the Saints this past off-season. A three-time Pro Bowler and two-time Super Bowl winner, Pierre-Paul was originally drafted by the New York Giants as the No. 15 overall pick in the 2010 draft. After eight seasons with the Giants and four with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he moved to Baltimore.

The Dolphins, currently at an 8-3 record, lead the AFC East before their upcoming game against the Washington Commanders on Sunday. With three wins in their last four games, they are competing for their first divisional title since 2008 and have not won a playoff game since the 2000 season.
