New Leader Sworn-in by Gabon Following Military Coup Within a Week

Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, the new military leader of Gabon, was officially sworn in as the country’s head on Monday, following the recent ousting of President Ali Bongo Ondimba in what appears to be a coup. The inauguration took place at the presidential palace in Libreville, where government officials, military personnel, and local leaders witnessed the ceremony. General Oligui, who happens to be a cousin of the deposed president, expressed his commitment to restoring power to the people through free elections, emphasizing that the military intervention had occurred peacefully and without bloodshed.

Prior to the mutiny, President Bongo had secured another term in office through a controversial election marred by irregularities and a lack of transparency. Following his removal from power, individuals close to Bongo were arrested on charges of betraying state institutions, engaging in extensive embezzlement of public funds, and international financial embezzlement. In addition, nine members of the Bongo family are currently facing criminal investigations in France for embezzlement and money laundering.

The international community, including the United States, has expressed concern about the situation in Gabon. The U.S. State Department spokesperson, Matthew Miller, stated their firm opposition to military takeovers or unconstitutional transfers of power, urging those responsible to release and ensure the safety of government officials and their families while preserving civilian rule.
