New Florida Election Rules Stopped by Federal Judge

A federal judge issued a ruling on Monday that prevents Florida from implementing certain provisions of a new elections law. The law, which bans noncitizens from handling or collecting voter registration forms, was deemed unconstitutional by the judge. Furthermore, the ruling blocks a ban that prohibits third-party voter registration groups from retaining personal information collected during the registration process. The judge stated that while election integrity is important, Florida’s solutions go beyond what is necessary to address the alleged problems.

Following the enactment of the larger elections bill signed by Governor Ron DeSantis, the NAACP and other voter registration groups filed a lawsuit against the state. Critics argue that the law makes it more difficult to register voters in marginalized communities, while Republicans claim it enhances election security. Notably, the judge who issued the ruling is an appointee of former President Obama and has previously ruled against the state in other election-related cases.

In the judge’s 58-page ruling, he emphasized that Florida can regulate elections and the voter registration process. However, the challenged provisions of the law exceed the limits set by the United States Constitution. Governor DeSantis’ office did not provide an immediate comment on the ruling.
