Nevada DMV Recalls Man’s License Plate Over Viral Joke

  • The Nevada DMV has recalled a man’s “GOBK2CA” license plate.
  • Adam Steelmon has proudly displayed this plate for over twenty years without any issues.
  • A spokesperson for the Nevada DMV stated that the plate was recalled due to its defamatory nature.

A Nevada man’s humorous license plate encouraging drivers to “go back to California” has been recalled by the state’s department of motor vehicles following its viral popularity on social media.

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the license plate was recalled in May following a complaint received by the DMV.

Eli Rohl, a spokesperson for the Nevada DMV, explained that the plate violated a section of the Nevada Administrative Code which prohibits defamatory statements.

Rohl further added, “If we have been rejecting applications for similar ‘back to California’ plates, it would be unfair to neglect action on this specific plate after receiving a complaint.”

Adam Steelmon, who had proudly displayed the license plate on his car for two decades, expressed his surprise at the recall.

Steelmon shared, “Local law enforcement officers have even complimented my license plate. I have been pulled over by Texas authorities. In 20 years, only one person has questioned the appropriateness of my plates.”

Steelmon intends to appeal the recall decision by presenting his case before an Administrative Law Judge, who will determine whether or not to uphold the recall, as stated in an email from Rohl.

Rohl clarified that Steelmon has the option to further appeal through the District court and eventually the Nevada Supreme Court if he disagrees with the judge’s decision.

Insider’s request for comment from the Nevada DMV remains unanswered as of Sunday.
