Netflix’s ‘Squid Game’ Season 2 Cast Faces Criticism for Underrepresentation of Women Amongst Fans

  • Netflix announced the cast for the highly anticipated second season of “Squid Game” on June 17th.
  • Fans expressed their disappointment with the absence of any female characters in the list.
  • Netflix assured Insider that future casting news will feature leading female characters.

Netflix finally revealed details about the second season of “Squid Game” on Saturday, almost two years after the premiere of the first season. However, some fans expressed their disappointment regarding the lack of female representation in the new cast.

The cast for the new season, which includes a mix of returning and new faces, was announced on Netflix’s official website. Returning cast members include Lee Jung-jae as the protagonist Gi-hun, Lee Byung-hun as the “Front Man” mastermind, and Wi Ha-jun as detective Hwang Jun-ho. Gong Yoo, who played the recruiter in the first season, will also make an appearance in the sequel.

The teaser trailer introduces several established South Korean actors who will join the cast for the second season.

This includes Yim Si-wan, a former K-pop idol turned versatile actor known for his role in the top-rated Netflix thriller “Unlocked.” Park Sung-hoon, the actor who portrayed the villain in Netflix’s popular K-drama “The Glory,” will also be part of the cast. Kang Ha-neul, recognized for his performance in the rom-com “When the Camellia Blooms,” and actor-rapper Yang Dong-geun from the historical drama “The Forbidden Marriage,” complete the lineup. Unfortunately, additional information about their characters was not provided in the press release.

While many fans are excited about the new additions to the cast, some expressed disappointment at the lack of female representation.

“This is an amazing cast, but it’s surprising that no women are featured,” tweeted one user. A top comment on Netflix’s Instagram post of the teaser trailer received over 4,000 likes and highlighted the absence of female characters, pointing out the memorable North Korean character Kang Sae-byeok (played by Jung Ho-yeon) from the first season. Similar sentiments were echoed in other tweets and Instagram comments.

Fortunately, Netflix reassured Insider that future casting news will introduce leading female characters to the series.

“This was the initial cast announcement for ‘Squid Game’ season two. We’re excited to share more casting news soon, which will include the leading female characters,” stated a Netflix spokesperson.

The production of the second season, helmed by Emmy-winning director Hwang Dong-hyuk, is scheduled to begin later this year according to a press release on June 17th.
