Netflix Documentary Reexamines the Johnny Depp vs. Amber Heard Trial

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s highly publicized defamation trial is set to be the subject of a Netflix documentary series, more than a year after the world watched the courtroom battle unfold live on TV. The trailer for the three-part series, titled “Depp v. Heard,” premiered on Wednesday, offering viewers a fresh perspective on the case between the former spouses. According to Netflix, the series will delve into the trial that captivated Hollywood and explore the subsequent online fallout. The synopsis also reveals that the documentary will provide both Depp and Heard’s testimonies side by side for the first time.

Directed by Emmy nominee Emma Cooper, known for her work on Netflix’s “The Mystery of Marilyn Monroe: The Unheard Tapes,” this documentary follows the recent dramatization of the trial in a movie called “Hot Take: The Depp/Heard Trial” on Tubi TV.

In his defamation lawsuit against Heard, filed in March 2019, Depp claimed that an op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post had severely damaged his career. Although she did not mention him by name, Heard alleged in the op-ed that she had been a victim of domestic abuse. Depp stated that this article led to his removal from the “Pirates of the Caribbean” reboot.

During the lengthy trial that began in April 2022, Heard, who had accused her ex-husband of physical and sexual assault during their brief marriage, faced intense public scrutiny. Depp also claimed to be a victim of spousal abuse. Both parties vehemently denied each other’s accusations.

Depp had initially sought $50 million in damages in his court filings, while Heard countersued for $100 million. The jury ruled mostly in Depp’s favor, awarding him $15 million in total damages. However, due to a Virginia law limiting punitive damages, Heard was ordered to pay $10.35 million.

Furthermore, Heard was granted $2 million in compensatory damages in her countersuit as a result of a defamatory statement made by Depp’s attorney.

Eventually, Heard agreed to a settlement that required her to pay her ex-husband $1 million, as confirmed by Depp’s legal team.

“Depp v. Heard” will be available for streaming on Netflix starting August 16th.
