NBC journalist criticizes New York columnist for ‘information bubble’

NBC News “disinformation” reporter Ben Collins expressed strong disagreement on Twitter following a statement made by New York magazine columnist Jonathan Chait regarding the construction of an “information bubble” among liberal journalists attacking conservative perspectives. Chait criticized Collins, whose coverage focuses on “disinformation, extremism, and the internet,” as stated in his NBC News biography. Chait’s column titled “In Defense of Independent Opinion Journalism” called out the liberal media for creating a counterpart to the information bubble that conservatives have long occupied. One of the points Chait highlighted was Collins’ passionate acceptance speech when he received the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Television Political Journalism, where Collins stated, “There is no meeting liars halfway, because the truth then becomes one-half lie. We must simply be louder, and clearer, with the truth.” Chait argued that Collins completely dismissed the idea that a journalist may need to concede something to the opposing side if it has a valid point.

Chait’s criticism of Collins was part of a broader evaluation of groupthink within the liberal media. He noted the prevalence of false information circulating among the left, such as the belief that Michael Brown was shot with his hands up or that the lab-leak theory has been debunked. In response, Collins unleashed a series of tweets targeting Chait.

Collins previously made headlines when he was suspended by NBC News from covering Elon Musk due to his social media mockery of the tech mogul. Despite the disagreement, Chait affirmed that he did not need to reach out for comment before writing criticism of published work and acknowledged specifically calling out Collins in his piece. He pointed out Collins’ ongoing Twitter outburst as supporting evidence for his critique.
