National Security Adviser: Future North Korean Nuclear Test Should Not Be Ruled Out

National security adviser Jake Sullivan expressed his belief that North Korea may conduct another nuclear test following the recent test launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). In an interview with CBS’s Margaret Brennan on “Face the Nation,” Sullivan stated that he has been concerned about North Korea’s nuclear ambitions for a long time, dating back to multiple administrations. However, he clarified that there are no immediate signs indicating an imminent test.

Sullivan acknowledged that the possibility of North Korea conducting another nuclear test in relation to its ICBM capabilities would not be surprising. The recent missile test occurred last Wednesday, with the missile traveling approximately 1,000 kilometers and reaching a maximum altitude of 6,000 kilometers before landing in the waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan.

Highlighting the longstanding history of North Korea’s missile testing, Sullivan emphasized the importance of close coordination with Japan and South Korea in addressing this threat. The United States remains committed to engaging in talks with North Korea without preconditions regarding its nuclear program during the Biden administration. Additionally, Sullivan emphasized the role of China, given its relationship with North Korea, in these discussions.
