National-resignation triggered by Zelenskyy’s plea for spending restrictions in Ukraine

In a call with Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of prioritizing defense spending during wartime. As a result, the Minister of Culture, Olexander Tkachenko, who advocated for several expensive projects, offered his resignation.

Zelenskyy stated in his video address that during times of war, the majority of state attention and resources should be allocated to defense. He urged Shmyhal to find alternative funding for projects that are truly essential, including those in the cultural sector. Zelenskyy emphasized that while museums, cultural centers, symbols, and television series are important, there are higher priorities.

Zelenskyy, a former television comedy star turned politician, called on local councils to exercise restraint in their spending. He emphasized that budget resources should be used fairly and appropriately, delaying non-essential projects such as cobblestones, city decorations, and fountains. Victory in the war should take precedence.

Zelenskyy also requested that Prime Minister Shmyhal consider replacing Minister of Culture and Information Policy, Olexander Tkachenko.

Within an hour, Tkachenko announced his resignation, remaining unapologetic about his projects. Tkachenko stated on Telegram that culture is important in wartime, as it encompasses our memory, history, language, and creativity. He emphasized that funding for culture during war is just as crucial as funding for military drones, as culture serves as a shield for our identity and borders.

It is unclear whether Tkachenko’s resignation has been accepted.
