National Report Provides Details on Meta’s Efforts to Develop AI-Powered Chatbots for User Retention

Meta Platforms is set to launch AI-powered chatbots with unique personalities as early as September, according to the Financial Times. These chatbots, designed by Meta, aim to enhance user engagement on its social media platforms. Prototypes include a chatbot that speaks like Abraham Lincoln and another that gives travel advice like a surfer. The purpose of these chatbots is to provide new search functionality and offer recommendations.

The report comes as Meta focuses on increasing retention for its text-based app Threads, which experienced a significant loss of users after its launch on July 5.

Meta declined to comment on the FT report when contacted by Reuters. The company reported a strong increase in advertising revenue in its recent earnings, with third-quarter revenue forecasted to exceed market expectations. Meta has been recovering from a challenging year and has focused on AI technology and reducing its workforce. In July, Meta launched Llama 2, an open-source AI model for commercial use. Apple is also said to be working on AI offerings similar to ChatGPT and Bard, using its own framework called ‘Ajax’.
