National: Putin Claims Poland is Plotting Attack on Belarus, Issues Warning of Russian Retaliation

President Vladimir Putin has accused NATO member Poland of harboring territorial ambitions in the former Soviet Union. He also warned that any aggression against Russia’s neighbor and ally, Belarus, would be seen as an attack on Russia itself. In response to the arrival of Russian Wagner mercenaries in Belarus, Poland’s Security Committee decided to deploy military units to its eastern border. However, Poland denies having any territorial ambitions in Belarus.

In addition, President Putin claimed that the western part of Poland was a gift from Soviet leader Joseph Stalin to the country and that Russia would remind Poland about this historical fact. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki countered by stating that “Stalin was a war criminal” and that historical truth is not up for debate. He further announced that the Russian Federation ambassador would be summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Belarus has also recently announced that Wagner mercenaries are conducting training exercises for Belarusian special forces near the Polish border. Meanwhile, Russia has begun stationing tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus for the first time. German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius expressed support for Poland and NATO in defending the alliance’s eastern flank.

President Putin went on to suggest that there are plans for a Polish-Lithuanian unit to be used for operations in western Ukraine, with ambitions to occupy territory there. He also mentioned that they have dreams of acquiring Belarusian lands. However, no evidence was provided to substantiate these claims.

Regarding the Wagner mercenary force, their leader Yevgeny Prigozhin was shown in a video welcoming his fighters to Belarus. While they are currently not participating in the war in Ukraine, Prigozhin ordered them to gather strength for Wagner’s operations in Africa while training the Belarusian army. Prigozhin considers Wagner to be Russia’s most effective fighting force, despite his frequent clashes with the Moscow defense establishment leading to an armed mutiny four weeks prior.

The mutiny concluded with an agreement that Wagner fighters, many of whom were recruited from prisons, could relocate to Belarus if they chose to do so.
