National Guardsman from Texas Shoots Man Across Border

A soldier with the Texas National Guard is currently being investigated for an uncommon shooting incident. According to the Dallas Morning News, the Guardsman fired shots across the Rio Grande, injuring a Mexican man on Saturday evening. The wounded man, identified as Darwin Jose Garcia, 37, was shot in the leg and is now in the process of recovery, as reported by the El Paso Times. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear. Initially, Garcia claimed to be a migrant attempting to cross the river and enter the US, but he later told reporters that he was engaged in an unspecified sport by the river, where other migrants were attempting to cross. Regardless, the use of lethal force has yet to be explained. A spokesperson for the National Guard has stated that the matter is under investigation.

According to an unnamed Customs and Border Protection official, as cited by the Washington Post, it appears that the Guardsman opened fire when three men on the Mexican side of the river began attacking migrants attempting to cross into the US. If this is the case, the shooting may be deemed justified, although it remains uncertain whether Garcia was an innocent bystander who was struck by the bullet. The Guardsman was on duty as part of Governor Greg Abbott’s Operation Lone Star, a robust mission aimed at preventing migrants from crossing the border into Texas. In response to the incident, Democratic state Sen. Cesar Blanco of El Paso expressed concern, stating, “I am deeply troubled by this escalation in force on our border. We are not at war with Mexico.” (Read more US-Mexico border stories.)
