National funding boost supports Canadian study on heart health and COVID-19 vaccines

A groundbreaking national study is set to receive additional funding to explore the impact of COVID-19 and COVID-19 mRNA vaccines on the heart. The study, called MYCOVACC, will now receive an additional $2 million from the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) over two years, bringing its total investment to $3.6 million over three years. The funding will allow for an expansion of the study, extended patient follow-up, and cardiac imaging on those affected.

Led by cardiologist Dr. Nathaniel Hawkins, the study aims to determine whether individuals who experience rare heart conditions like myocarditis and pericarditis are at an increased risk of future health problems. This research will provide valuable insights for clinicians, public health agencies, and decision-makers to inform future vaccine programs.

The study, initiated in October 2022, was prompted by reports of rare cases of myocarditis and pericarditis following mRNA vaccines and COVID-19 infection. While most individuals recover fully from these conditions, long-term outcomes require further investigation.

The new funding will enable the study to continue expanding, extend patient follow-up, conduct cardiac MRI investigations, and explore adverse event reporting following immunization. The aim is to improve public trust in vaccine safety, especially among young people and their parents. Health Canada has pointed out that myocarditis and pericarditis have occurred more frequently than expected in adolescents and young adults, particularly males, and following the second vaccine dose.

It is important to note that in most cases, symptoms of myocarditis or pericarditis resolve quickly with medical care.
