National: 120 employees dismissed from CRA following investigation into CERB claims

The Canada Revenue Agency has announced that 120 employees have been separated from the agency following an internal review of employees who claimed the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB). This review process, initiated on June 30, has examined approximately 600 cases, with investigations and disciplinary measures ongoing.

Initially, the CRA had terminated 20 employees when the review process was first announced. According to CRA spokesperson Sylvie Branch, any employee found to have inappropriately claimed the CERB will be required to repay the amounts if they haven’t done so already. The CRA is dedicated to upholding the integrity of Canada’s tax and benefit systems and demonstrating its fairness as a trusted organization.

The Canada Revenue Agency administered the $2,000-per-month CERB between March and September 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Branch’s statement clarifies that being a CRA employee did not automatically disqualify a person from receiving the CERB, as the agency employs temporary and contract workers who may have been eligible. The review has identified 30 employees so far who properly claimed the CERB and met the eligibility criteria. Branch reinforces that the CRA has over 60,000 employees and maintains confidence in their overall integrity.
