Choosing a Paint Color with Expertise

Paint holds the power to completely transform a space, making it one of the easiest and most affordable ways to update a room. However, choosing the perfect color can be a daunting task. With countless options available from various paint companies, the decision can feel overwhelming. Interior designer Brigette Romanek understands this struggle and believes that even small variations in color can make a significant impact.

Romanek, known for her bold and saturated color choices, pays attention to every detail, even when using understated neutrals. In her own home, she utilized 16 different shades of white to create the desired ambiance in various rooms. According to Romanek, colors have the ability to affect mood and mental health, making the selection process as important as choosing the right furniture.

To understand Romanek’s approach, we joined her as she updated her primary bedroom. She shared some valuable insights. The first step is to assess the room by asking yourself questions like: What kind of feeling do I want to evoke in this space? What activities will take place here? Your answers will guide your color choice. For statement-making spaces like lounges and powder rooms, deep greens or grays may be suitable, while refreshing blues and pinks could work well in lively spaces like kitchens and dining rooms. For a bedroom, a soothing off-white or beige may be the best option, but ultimately, the choice is yours.

In the case of her own bedroom, Romanek decided to paint over the existing white with a warm tan shade. She aimed to create a cozier atmosphere, transforming the space into a layered and cocoon-like haven. Romanek firmly believes that the paint color has the power to achieve this desired transformation.

Once you have a general idea of the color you want, it’s time to explore your options. Collect paint chips and decks from various companies like Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams, Farrow & Ball, Backdrop, and Clare. These companies offer a wide range of hues that can cater to any preference. Narrow down your choices to a few favorites.

To get a better sense of how the colors will look in your space, tape the paint chips directly onto the wall. If you have chosen fabrics, carpets, or accessories for the room, hold them up against the chips to see how the colors complement each other.

Next, it’s time to paint large samples. Select two or three of your favorite colors from the chips and purchase small cans of paint for testing. Apply the paint on the wall in large four-by-four-foot sections. Ensure that painters do the proper priming and apply two to three coats of paint for an accurate representation of the final color. This step also allows you to assess the finish. Romanek often uses a matte sheen in adult bedrooms, a wipeable eggshell finish in children’s rooms, and high-gloss paint on distinctive moldings. Keep in mind that shinier finishes may reveal imperfections more prominently.

Although peel-and-stick sheets from companies like Samplize can save time, Romanek prefers the traditional method of painting samples on the wall. This way, she can fully guarantee that she will love the outcome of her color choice.

Once you have the samples on the wall, observe them at different times of the day, in both natural and artificial light. It’s crucial to live with the colors for a few days and see how they appear in various lighting conditions. For example, late afternoon sunlight tends to make colors appear warmer than morning light. Some colors, such as grays, can be tricky and may look different under different lighting conditions.

After careful consideration, choosing the final favorite should be a straightforward decision. Taking the time to go through this process ensures that you’ll be satisfied with your color choice for years to come. Romanek settled on the color “Turbinado” from Clare for her bedroom.

Once you’ve made your decision, it’s time to purchase the chosen paint and start painting. If you plan to do the painting yourself, make sure to work neatly and allow sufficient drying time between coats. Remember that you probably won’t be painting the walls again for a long time. Finally, move in your furniture and accessories, and enjoy the transformation.

Color plays a significant role in our living spaces, and by dedicating time to selecting the right color, you can create an environment that truly suits your style and enhances your well-being. Romanek suggests embracing the process and taking a moment to find the perfect color that allows you to relax and feel content in your space.
