Nancy Pelosi’s Pledge to Seek Reelection in 2024 Amidst Democratic Bid for House Majority Recovery – Orange County Register

By LISA MASCARO | AP Congressional Correspondent

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced on Friday that she will be running for reelection to Congress in 2024, with the goal of helping Democrats regain the majority. This news comes as Republicans currently have a narrow control over the House, with a 222-212 majority and one vacancy. Democrats are hopeful that they can regain power as President Joe Biden runs for a second term.

At 83 years old, Pelosi made the announcement before volunteers and labor allies in the San Francisco area district that she has represented for over 35 years. In a tweet, Pelosi stated, “Now more than ever our City needs us to advance San Francisco values and further our recovery. Our country needs America to show the world that our flag is still there, with liberty and justice for ALL. That is why I am running for reelection — and respectfully ask for your vote.”

Despite talk of retirement, Pelosi’s announcement confirms that she will continue to be an influential lawmaker, pivotal party figure, and strong fundraiser for the Democrats. It also coincides with the ongoing discussion about the age of political leaders, including Biden and Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell. Pelosi has always taken her own path, from being one of the few women elected to Congress in 1987 to becoming the first female speaker in 2007.

During her time as speaker, Pelosi achieved significant legislative feats such as the passage of the Affordable Care Act. She also dealt with challenging situations, including two impeachments of Republican President Donald Trump and the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. As House Republicans prepare to launch an impeachment inquiry into Biden, Pelosi’s decision to seek reelection is a pivotal moment for both her and the Democratic Party.

Pelosi’s decision was met with disappointment from other Democrats who had hoped to run for her congressional seat. However, she is focused on securing federal resources for San Francisco’s recovery from the coronavirus pandemic-era closures. Pelosi believes that the city needs support to address issues such as crime, violence, and drugs, particularly in areas like the Tenderloin District. She also emphasized that San Francisco should not be broadly portrayed as unsafe and crime-ridden.

As one of the party’s most prolific fundraisers for the House, Pelosi’s decision to run again solidifies her role as a key political strategist and supporter of the Democratic Party. While it is rare for former party leaders to continue in Congress as members, Pelosi’s determination to fight for her city and contribute to the nation’s recovery reflects her unwavering commitment to public service.
