My Struggle with Fungal Meningitis: Battling the Aftermath of a $3,000 Liposuction and BBL Procedure in Mexico

A mother-of-two has bravely shared her harrowing three-month battle with a brain infection she contracted during cut-price cosmetic surgery in Mexico. Alondra Lamos, 27, underwent liposuction and a Brazilian butt lift (BBL) in May and was later diagnosed with fungal meningitis. She experienced excruciating pain and paralysis, leading to her hospitalization in Arizona. It is suspected that she contracted the infection from unsterilized equipment or contaminated anesthetic medication used during the procedures. Tragically, this outbreak has already claimed the lives of seven other American women.

In a cautionary tale highlighting the dangers of “medical tourism,” Lamos, who initially booked her surgery with a clinic called Clinica-K3 in November, shared her experience. The surgery, which cost her $3,000 compared to the $10,000+ it would have cost in the US, initially seemed successful. However, after about three weeks, she began experiencing debilitating pain, fatigue, and other symptoms. Seeking medical attention, she was initially dismissed by doctors who failed to link her symptoms to the surgery. It was only after considerable hardship that she was properly diagnosed with fungal meningitis and admitted to the hospital.

Meningitis occurs when the meninges, the protective membranes around the brain and spinal cord, become inflamed. While it typically results from a viral or bacterial infection, in rarer cases, it can be caused by a fungus like Fusarium solani, the suspected culprit in this outbreak. Fusarium solani is a common soil fungus and has a fatality rate of over 50%. Infection can occur through direct inoculation or inhalation of spores. While rare, there have been previous cases of fusarial infections.

During her time in the hospital, Lamos formed a bond with another patient, Shyanne Medrano, who also underwent the same surgeries. Tragically, Medrano passed away on May 16, 2023. Lamos herself has undergone multiple surgeries, including the placement of an ommaya reservoir in her head to deliver medication directly to her brain and spine. However, she has faced complications and had to undergo a second surgery to correct issues with the reservoir.

Lamos, who has missed important moments with her children due to her hospitalization, urges caution to women considering cosmetic surgery. While acknowledging that she cannot be a hypocrite as she underwent the procedures herself, she emphasizes the importance of choosing a board-certified surgeon and being aware of the risks involved.
