Mountaineer Allegedly Climbs Over Dying Man, Despite Efforts to Save Him

A Norwegian mountaineer who recently set a record is defending herself against criticism over the death of a Pakistani porter on K2. The porter, Mohammad Hassan, slipped off a narrow trail near the summit of the treacherous mountain and died after several hours. Two climbers argue that his life could have been saved if everyone on the mountain that day had focused on getting him down safely. Despite the controversy surrounding Hassan’s death, Norwegian climber Kristin Harila and her guide Tenjin achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the world’s fastest climbers, scaling the 14 highest mountains in only 92 days.

In response to the criticism, Harila explained that given the snowy conditions on the day of the incident, it would not have been possible to carry Hassan down. She emphasized that if there had been a chance to rescue him, everyone would have made the attempt. Harila expressed her distress over the controversy but did not provide further details. She also revealed that she had received death threats. Harila asserted that they took a significant risk in trying to save Hassan and mentioned that he did not seem adequately equipped or trained for high-altitude climbing. Local authorities have launched an investigation into his death.

Harila recounted that Hassan slipped and fell off the narrow path at approximately 2:15 am on July 27. At the time, she was in eighth place, with her team members in seventh and ninth place. As they endeavored to pull Hassan onto the path, an avalanche occurred near her forward fixing team. After spending 90 minutes attending to Hassan, Harila and a teammate proceeded towards the summit to check on the fixing team. Meanwhile, their cameraman Gabriel stayed with Hassan, providing him with oxygen, warm water, and attempting to keep him warm. Gabriel remained with Hassan for 2.5 hours until he started running out of oxygen. He then joined the sherpas at the summit who had extra oxygen tanks. Harila mentioned that there were others attending to Hassan during this time. When Gabriel reached the summit, Harila inquired about Hassan’s condition, to which Gabriel responded that he was “in very bad shape.” On their descent, Harila encountered Hassan’s lifeless body on the path.
