Moroccan Society of Alberta Extends Support to Earthquake Victims: Empowering Communities in Need

In Edmonton, the impact of the devastating earthquake in Morocco is being keenly felt. The Moroccan community in the capital city has many family and friends in the country and is rallying to support them in this time of need.

This earthquake, the largest to hit the country in over a century, has claimed the lives of over 2,000 people and left hundreds injured.

Driss Elalmi, a board director of the Moroccan Society of Alberta, has been closely following the earthquake as his sister is in Morocco. He shared, “She was saying that we have an earthquake and we don’t know what’s going on. Then she hung up right away so I didn’t know what’s going on.”

Fortunately, Elalmi’s sister and her family managed to find safety. However, witnessing the devastation from a distance has been incredibly difficult for them.

Elalmi expressed, “We watch the media, we see that everybody’s outside in the streets and all the houses are empty but we still don’t know what’s going on.”

To show solidarity for the victims and their families, the Moroccan Society of Alberta opened its doors for donations on Sunday. Mina Elmadi shared, “A lot of folks are still waiting for help. Still cut off contact, we don’t even know if they’re alive or not, but there’s also a lot of pride in seeing how Moroccans are taking care of each other.”

Donations are being collected by the society to provide support to the victims of this rare earthquake. Many attendees of the event expressed their desire to help, understanding that the recovery process will be long.

“The towns on top of the mountains, the roads were washed out and it’s hard for the people to give them help,” said Abdo Assadaray.
