Morning Run Claims Life of Ex-Russian Black Sea Commander in Assassination

An ex-Russian Black Sea submarine commander, who was accused of being a war criminal by Kyiv and had been placed on their list of enemies, was allegedly assassinated during his morning run in southern Russia. Stanislav Rzhitsky, 42, was shot seven times while jogging in an empty city park in Krasnodar, roughly 145 miles away from the Kerch Bridge that connects mainland Russia to Crimea.

The Ukrainian website “Myrotvorets,” meaning “Peacemaker,” which serves as an unofficial database of individuals considered enemies of Ukraine, had previously disclosed Rzhitsky’s home address and picture. Recently, his photo on the site was covered with the word “Liquidated” written in red letters. It appears that Rzhitsky may have further facilitated access to his whereabouts, as he allegedly posted his running route and schedule on an undisclosed app.

A Russian Telegram channel called Baza, believed to have links to Russian security services, suggested that the app could have been used by the killer to track Rzhitsky. Rzhitsky had reportedly left the military at the end of 2021 but was not officially discharged until August the following year.

Ukraine’s defense intelligence agency shared details of the killing on its Telegram channel, stating that Rzhitsky was shot seven times with a Makarov pistol, resulting in his death at the scene. The agency noted that due to heavy rain, there were no witnesses present to provide further details or identify the attacker.

While Ukraine has not claimed responsibility for the shooting, it also did not disclose the source of their information. Russia’s Investigative Committee announced the arrest of a man in his 60s who had been found in possession of a pistol and a silencer. A video released by the state investigative authority showed armed men breaking into a home and apprehending a man in his underwear.

A Telegram channel run by pro-Ukrainian individuals, who have reportedly claimed responsibility for numerous sabotage attacks in Russia, alleged that Rzhitsky was involved in the submarine-launched missile strike on Vinnytsia, Ukraine, in July 2022, which resulted in the deaths of at least 23 people, including a 4-year-old girl.

Since the war in Ukraine began 17 months ago, Reuters discovered that at least two other individuals listed in the Myrotvorets database as pro-war Russian figures have been killed in Russia.
