Monet Artwork Targeted by Climate Protesters with Paint

Climate activists in Sweden have once again chosen a famous artwork as the target of their protest. This time, two women covered the protective glass of Claude Monet’s The Artist’s Garden at Giverny with red paint and glued themselves to the painting. The National Museum in Stockholm, where the incident took place, has taken the painting for examination, as reported by ARTnews. The police have classified the act as aggravated vandalism.

The two women, one a nurse and the other a nursing student, wore T-shirts representing the Aterstall Vatmarker (Restore Wetlands) group. Helen Wahlgren, a spokesperson for the group, spoke to AFP about how the climate crisis is also a health crisis, with millions of lives being lost due to the climate disaster. The group argues that beautiful gardens, like the one depicted in Monet’s painting, will soon become a distant memory.

The director of the museum, Per Hedström, strongly condemned the action. In response to the incident, Hedström stated, “We completely dissociate ourselves from actions that put art and cultural heritage at risk of damage. Cultural heritage holds immense symbolic value, and it is unacceptable to attack or destroy it for any reason.” (Last year, protesters in London poured soup on a Van Gogh painting.)
