The White House made additional announcements just before the event, revealing the attendance of Senator Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), and Hunter Biden, who recently made public his admission of guilt in federal tax crimes.
Other notable figures present at the event include Attorney General Merrick Garland, designer Ralph Lauren, and Martin Luther King III.
In her pre-event statement, First Lady Jill Biden emphasized that the visit would unite “the world’s oldest and the world’s largest democracies.” She also highlighted the extensive U.S.-India partnership in addressing global challenges, which has been strengthened over the years.
The state visit and dinner have not been without controversy, as some lawmakers and human rights organizations have voiced their criticism of the warm welcome extended to Modi by the White House.
This event marks the third state dinner during President Biden’s tenure. Previously, he hosted South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol in April and France’s Emmanuel Macron in December of last year.
First Lady Jill Biden revealed an exquisite vegetarian menu for the occasion, tailored to Modi’s dietary preferences. The menu includes delectable dishes such as marinated millet, stuffed portobello mushrooms, and saffron-infused risotto.
The evening’s entertainment will feature performances by renowned violinist Joshua Bell and the a cappella group Penn Masala.
