Modelo Especial extends sales lead over Bud Light following the Dylan Mulvaney controversy

Modelo Especial, the rising star in the world of beers, continues to outpace Bud Light in sales. Despite Bud Light’s ill-fated association with trans influencer Dylan Mulvaney, the latest data reveals that Modelo has widened its lead over Bud Light in year-to-date sales. Bump Williams Consulting and NielsonIQ report that Modelo now accounts for 8.4% of beer sales in stores through August 19, surpassing Bud Light’s 8.2% share.

According to Williams, the head of the consultancy, consumers are increasingly choosing Modelo over Bud Light, purchasing it more frequently and in larger quantities as summer comes to an end. Retailers are capitalizing on its growing popularity by dedicating more shelf space to Modelo Especial.

In a monumental shift, last week Modelo officially became the top-selling beer in the US, ending Bud Light’s two-decade reign. The latest industry data indicates that the gap between the two brands is only widening, with Modelo commanding an 8.34% market share compared to Bud Light’s 8.28% through August 12.

Since May, Modelo, which is distributed in the US by Constellation Brands, has consistently surpassed Bud Light in monthly sales. Bud Light’s controversial association with Mulvaney on April 1 sparked nationwide outrage, leading to a boycott that shows no signs of relenting.

While Bud Light continued to experience a decline in sales, with a 26.8% decrease through August 19, Modelo Especial enjoyed a 15.9% growth. Additionally, other non-Anheuser-Busch related brands such as Miller Lite, Coors Light, and Yuengling Lager have also gained market share, with sales growth ranging from 18.5% to 21.6% for the week ending August 19. Budweiser, another Anheuser-Busch brand, suffered a 10.3% decline in sales over the same period. However, Michelob Ultra experienced a slight upturn with a 0.4% increase in sales.

In the second quarter, Anheuser-Busch InBev, the parent company of the brewery, reported a significant decline in revenue by 10.5% and a nearly 30% decrease in profit.
