“Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One” dominated the weekend box office, but fell slightly short of industry expectations with a domestic gross of $80 million over five days, according to Sunday estimates.
The latest installment of Tom Cruise’s long-running action franchise, which first launched in 1996, premiered on Wednesday to gain an early advantage over the weekend competition. To offset its substantial budget, estimated to be around $290 million, the film will rely on international markets.
Comscore reported that the movie earned $56.2 million from Friday to Sunday.
In second place, the faith-based drama “Sound of Freedom” grossed $27 million during its second week in theaters, according to Comscore.
“Insidious: The Red Door” secured third place with $13 million in its second week.
Meanwhile, “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” plummeted to fourth place with $12 million, experiencing a sharp decline from its $60 million opening weekend only two weeks ago.
Pixar’s “Elemental” claimed fifth place with $8.7 million in its fifth week at North American theaters.
Completing the top ten domestic releases, as estimated by Comscore, were “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” ($6 million), “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” ($3.4 million), “No Hard Feelings” ($3.3 million), “Joy Ride” ($2.5 million), and “The Little Mermaid” ($2.3 million).
