As anticipated, “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One” has claimed the top spot on the weekend box office chart. However, its domestic gross of $80 million over a five-day period falls slightly below industry expectations, as estimated on Sunday.
The latest installment of Tom Cruise’s long-running action franchise, which first debuted in 1996, opened on Wednesday to get a head start on the weekend competition. The film now aims to rely on foreign markets to help recoup its substantial budget, estimated at around $290 million by multiple reports.
In that regard, it has made a promising start, with an estimated international gross of $155 million from Friday to Sunday, surpassing all other films.
On the domestic front, the film earned $56.2 million from Friday to Sunday, according to Comscore.
In second place is the faith-based drama “Sound of Freedom,” which grossed $27 million from Friday to Sunday in its second week of release, as reported by Comscore.
“Insidious: The Red Door” secured third place with $13 million in its second week.
“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” landed in fourth place with $12 million. This marks a significant drop from its opening weekend gross of $60 million just two weeks ago.
Fifth place belongs to Pixar’s “Elemental” with $8.7 million in its fifth week in North American theaters.
The remaining top 10 domestic releases, as estimated by Comscore, include “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” ($6 million), “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” ($3.4 million), “No Hard Feelings” ($3.3 million), “Joy Ride” ($2.5 million), and “The Little Mermaid” ($2.3 million).
The total three-day box office haul for this weekend is estimated to be $141 million. Thus far this year, the cumulative total stands at $5.018 billion, showing a 13% increase compared to the same period last year, according to Comscore.
