Mission Hills Buyback Yields Over 300 Pounds of Fireworks

An anonymous buyback event at Brand Park in Mission Hills resulted in the collection of more than 300 pounds of fireworks, as announced by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD).

The LAPD tweeted on Saturday, “Today, LAPD participated in the Fireworks Buyback, an event tailored to keep the community safe from illegal fireworks for the 4th of July. The event resulted in the collection of over 380 lbs of commercial, consumer, and homemade fireworks.”

Participants who turned in fireworks during the event received various rewards such as tickets to Dodgers games, Universal Studios, gas cards, or other prizes.

The rewards offered depended on the weight and type of fireworks turned in and were given on a first-come, first-serve basis. This buyback program was created through legislation authored by Los Angeles City Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez in 2021.

Before the buyback took place, Rodriguez urged the public to be responsible and turn in any illegal fireworks they possessed. She emphasized, “If they’re in possession of these items, don’t go popping them off because you feel you already spent the money. We’re offering you an opportunity to turn it back and get something for it.”

Rodriguez highlighted the negative impacts of illegal fireworks on the community, including injuries and distress to people and animals, heightened environmental pollution, and the increased risk of fires in high fire-hazard zones.

She stated, “Every single year, we emphasize the importance of residents understanding that fireworks in the city of Los Angeles are illegal. They pose a great danger of physical harm to individuals that are unprepared to deal with explosives.” Fireworks are also prohibited in unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County.

However, more than 40 cities in Los Angeles and Orange counties do allow the sale and personal use of state-approved fireworks. This includes cities like Inglewood, Lakewood, Anaheim, and Huntington Beach. For a complete list of these cities, refer to the following:
