Misleading Letters: Both Remain and Leave Spread Falsehoods to the Detriment of the Public

In yesterday’s Today programme, Mr. Brown misleads us once again about immigration. His claim that the greatest issue is illegal immigration neglects the impact that unrestricted legal immigration, amounting to hundreds of thousands per year, has on the accessibility of public services for ordinary people.

He fails to consider the time it takes to train the necessary healthcare professionals and the financial investment needed to construct housing for them. These factors directly and negatively affect the lives of ordinary citizens.

Sustainable financial arrangements for pensioners will no longer be under David Cameron’s control if Brexit emerges victorious. This is regardless of whether Britain stays in or leaves the EU.

The “triple lock” for increasing UK state pensions by at least 2.5% annually, even in times of slower earnings growth, will eventually become unsustainable. Increased taxes in the UK have to cover the cost of these pension raises. The EU cannot be relied upon as a source of unlimited funds to fulfill extravagant pension promises made by British or other politicians, as recent events in Greece have shown.

Remain campaigners ought to find honest and credible positive reasons for Britain to stay in the EU, instead of resorting to misleading forecasts of doomsday scenarios that are just as likely to occur within the currently mismanaged EU. As long as the UK continues to produce goods and services that are in demand worldwide, people will purchase them regardless of a trade agreement. Many products sold in Britain and France originate from China, Bangladesh, Japan, India, Indonesia, Turkey, and Vietnam. None of these countries are part of the EU single market, yet they are successfully trading with both the UK and the EU.

If there is a convincing argument for the EU, it should be presented rather than relying on childish threats and fabricated disaster scenarios.

Some potential Brexit voters may be driven by outdated, patriotic sentiment. However, it is worth considering the consequences. Do we really want to leave the Irish as the sole native speakers of English, the new lingua franca in Europe, giving them enhanced influence?

Perhaps it is time to replace the lost world empire with a form of linguistic and cultural imperialism in Europe. This is challenging to achieve from the outside.

You may think this argument is trivial, but it is no more so than the jingoism it responds to, which threatens to isolate Britain dangerously.

We have consulted our children on how to vote next week, as they will have to live with the consequences for a longer period of time.
