Mishap on Flight Leads Woman to Unexpected Destination, 1,000 Miles Away from her Intended City

  • An inexperienced traveler in India was mistakenly put on the wrong flight and ended up in a different city.
  • She realized the mistake after arriving in Pune, which was 1,000 miles away from her intended destination.
  • According to her travel agent, Wasifa Jan was instructed by airline staff to board the incorrect plane.

A passenger on a low-cost airline in India discovered on Monday that she had arrived in a city approximately 1,000 miles away from her intended destination after being mistakenly directed to board the wrong flight.

Wasifa Jan was scheduled to fly from New Delhi to Srinagar in the Jammu and Kashmir region. However, she was mistakenly placed on a flight to Pune. Both flights were operated by SpiceJet, a low-cost carrier.

This was Wasifa’s first time flying, as reported by The Times of India.

According to Salem Ismail, the managing director of Wachubaaya Tours and Travels, Wasifa was waiting at the correct boarding gate, but her flight was delayed. At that point, airline ground staff approached her and instructed her to board the flight to Pune instead.

“It is surprising that none of the staff noticed the error and allowed her to board,” said Ismail, per The Times of India.

Wasifa only realized she had been put on the wrong flight upon arriving in Pune. She had taken her assigned seat, thinking it was for her original flight to Srinagar.

Pune is some 1,000 miles from Sringar.

Wachubaaya Tours and Travels tweeted a complaint to SpiceJet, sharing a screenshot of Wasifa’s boarding pass.

SpiceJet acknowledged the incident and apologized to Wasifa when contacted by The Times of India.

“We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused to the passenger. We are arranging for her travel back to Srinagar today itself,” a spokesperson told the outlet.

Wasifa returned to New Delhi via another airline, IndiGo, and then flew back to Srinagar on a SpiceJet flight, as reported by The Economic Times.

SpiceJet has not provided a comment at the time of writing.

In a similar incident in May, an EasyJet passenger who planned to travel from Scotland to Portugal mistakenly boarded a flight to the English city of Bristol, approximately 300 miles away from their intended destination at Glasgow Airport.

Earlier that month, a Frontier Airlines passenger at Philadelphia International Airport was instructed to board a flight to Jamaica instead of Jacksonville, Florida. The passenger arrived in Jamaica without a passport but returned to Philadelphia a few hours later.
