California couple may have discovered a cure to a mysterious and potentially deadly respiratory condition plaguing dogs across the nation. John and Becky Oliver believe their award-winning golden retriever, Ike, is on the path to recovery after receiving a lifesaving antibiotic treatment for Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex (CIRDC), which can lead to severe pneumonia-like symptoms and has been resistant to traditional antibiotic treatments.
Ike contracted CIRDC while competing in dog shows and was immediately quarantined behind glass when taken to the vet. Despite multiple tests, veterinarians were unable to determine Ike’s illness until a stranger suggested trying chloramphenicol, an antibiotic typically used for treating human conjunctivitis.
After administering chloramphenicol, Ike’s condition improved, and he was able to go home from the vet. The Olivers shared Ike’s journey on social media to provide hope to other dog owners dealing with the same illness.
Cases of CIRDC have been reported across the country, and veterinarians are working on finding effective treatment options.
