Mike Tirico worried about manipulated positive COVID test after discussing China’s alleged human rights violations during the Games

NBC broadcaster Mike Tirico kicked off his Winter Olympics coverage last year in Beijing by boldly addressing China’s alleged human rights abuses against Uyghur Muslims. Recognizing the growing diplomatic boycott by Western countries, Tirico openly discussed the serious concerns surrounding Beijing hosting the Games amidst accusations of genocidal actions against millions of Muslim Uyghurs.

During an episode of “The Marchand and Ourand Sports Media Podcast,” Tirico emphasized the importance of speaking out about these issues. He revealed that their first segment of the broadcast from Beijing focused on the Uyghur population, shedding light on the treatment and challenges faced by the Muslim community in China.

Tirico admitted to some apprehension about potential consequences that could arise from their coverage. He expressed concerns about potential retaliation from China, even jokingly mentioning the possibility of his COVID test mysteriously turning up positive after discussing the treatment of the Uyghurs.

Fortunately, Tirico did not encounter any issues with his COVID tests while he was in China. The United States, along with Britain, Australia, Canada, and later India, implemented a diplomatic boycott against the country, further highlighting the international discontent with China’s actions.

Multiple countries, including the United States, other governments, and the United Nations, have accused China of detaining over a million Uyghurs and other Muslim ethnic minority groups in detention camps. Reports of torture, sexual assault, and forced assimilation have emerged from those who have experienced these camps firsthand.

Despite these accusations, China has consistently denied any wrongdoing. However, the growing global concern and attention on this issue are undeniable.

It’s worth noting that Ryan Gaydos, a senior editor for Fox News Digital, contributed to this report.
