Mike Kafka’s primary focus shifts to Giants, putting Northwestern job on the backburner

Pat Fitzgerald and Northwestern University have received praise from former quarterback Mike Kafka.

Kafka, now in his second year as the Giants’ offensive coordinator, played for Northwestern from 2006-2009 and later worked as a graduate assistant for the team. Despite recent controversy surrounding Fitzgerald and the university, with allegations of hazing and a toxic football culture, Kafka has fond memories of his time at Northwestern.

“I have nothing but love and respect for Coach Fitz and my experience at Northwestern was amazing,” Kafka said before Thursday’s practice. “I made lifelong friends, met my wife, and started a family there. It was truly a great experience.”

Kafka’s tenure at Northwestern coincided with Fitzgerald’s initial years as head coach. Now, with Northwestern in need of a new head coach, there is speculation that Kafka could be a potential candidate for the position.

“Right now, my focus is solely on training camp,” Kafka added.

Giants’ general manager Joe Schoen has addressed his relationship with star player Saquon Barkley.

Schoen stated that their relationship is strong, emphasizing that there was no animosity during contract negotiations last season. He explained how he had an open conversation with Barkley, reminding him that contract talks are part of the business side of the sport and not personal.

Despite Barkley’s absence from minicamp, Schoen praised his dedication and performance at training camp, noting that Barkley came into camp in exceptional shape as if he had been present throughout the offseason.

Rookie running back Eric Gray, selected by the Giants in the fifth round of the draft, has been given the opportunity to practice as a punt returner during training camp.

Known for his explosive skills, Gray is a promising candidate for the position. Special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey acknowledged that Gray is still learning, but he commended his talent and work ethic, highlighting his previous experience in college as a punt returner for Oklahoma.
