Mike Dunleavy Jr Takes Over as General Manager, Replacing Bob Myers in the Warriors Organization

The Golden State Warriors have made an internal promotion to fill the position of general manager, with Mike Dunleavy Jr. taking on the role. This announcement comes ahead of the upcoming draft next week. Owner Joe Lacob had previously expressed the organization’s interest in considering internal candidates when current general manager Bob Myers announced his departure at the end of June.

Mike Dunleavy Jr., 42, has been working closely with Myers in the front office, serving as vice president of basketball operations for the past two seasons, following two years as assistant general manager. This will be his sixth season in a front-office role. Dunleavy joined the Warriors as a pro scout in 2018 after concluding his 15-year playing career, during which he spent time with the team from 2002 to 2007 after being selected as the third overall draft pick in 2002 from Duke University.

“We believe Mike is the perfect candidate to lead our basketball operations department,” said Lacob. He highlighted Dunleavy’s extensive basketball knowledge gained from his family background, his 15-year NBA career, and his experience working under Bob Myers in the front office. Lacob also praised Dunleavy’s youth, energy, relationships within the league, and his ability to effectively communicate with players and coaches. He expressed confidence in Dunleavy’s readiness to take on the challenge and responsibility of the new role.

Dunleavy will face significant tasks and decisions as he takes over from Myers, who played a major role in the Warriors’ previous championship run. Myers departs after the team’s loss to the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference semifinals this year. One of Dunleavy’s key decisions will involve the future of Draymond Green, who holds a $27.6 million player option and has expressed his desire to continue playing alongside Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson in pursuit of another championship.

Overall, this promotion showcases the Warriors’ commitment to nurturing internal talent and maintaining continuity within their organization.
